Peak District Weekend Itinerary: Two Days of Walks and Villages

Mam Tor and the Great Ridge

This two-day Peak District itinerary balances one proper ridge or moorland walk with a gentler day among villages, dales and good food. It is a weekend, not an SAS selection course.

Where to base yourself

Castleton suits Mam Tor, Hathersage suits Stanage Edge and Edale is best for Kinder Scout. Compare the best Peak District villages. For a cottage or self-catering base, browse Peak District and UK stays on Snaptrip.

Day one: the headline walk

Make Saturday the day for the bigger walk, while you have fresh legs and enough daylight to avoid turning the final descent into an argument with your phone torch.

Mam Tor and the Great Ridge

For a first Peak District weekend, Mam Tor is difficult to beat. The ridge gives wide views without demanding a full day on remote moorland, and Castleton makes a useful base before or after the walk. It is popular for good reason, which is travel-writing shorthand for “do not arrive at noon and expect solitude”.

Stanage Edge

Stanage Edge is the better choice if you want gritstone scenery and a route that can be adjusted more easily to the weather. Hathersage works particularly well as a base, with places to eat and useful transport connections.

Kinder Scout

If you want the more serious walking day, choose Kinder Scout from Edale. The plateau is rougher and navigation can become much more important in poor visibility, so this is the option to save for suitable conditions rather than forcing it because it was written in the weekend plan.

Whichever route you choose, check the forecast before leaving and keep a lower-level alternative in reserve. The Peak District will still be there next weekend.

Day two: dales and villages

Sunday works better when it is deliberately gentler. After a substantial Saturday walk, there is very little glory in scheduling another enormous climb before a long journey home.

Padley Gorge and Hathersage

Padley Gorge gives you woodland, streams and gritstone scenery without needing another summit day. Pair it with Hathersage for lunch or a wander around the village.

Castleton and the Hope Valley

If you stayed around Castleton, leave time to explore the village and the surrounding Hope Valley. A shorter local walk is often a better Sunday than trying to squeeze in another major route simply because there are blank hours on the itinerary.

Monsal Trail

The Monsal Trail is another useful second-day option, particularly if the higher ground is sitting under cloud. It offers an easier outing through limestone country and can be shortened to suit your departure time.

Keep Sunday flexible so the final train or drive is not conducted in damp panic.

If the weather turns

A Peak District weekend does not need two summit days to be worthwhile. Low cloud, strong wind or persistent rain are good reasons to switch to woodland, valley and village routes. Our guide to the best walks in the Peak District gives you more options to match to the conditions.

If you are visiting in autumn, the best autumn walks in the Peak District are also worth keeping as alternatives.

Getting around without a car

You can build a good weekend around the Hope Valley railway line, particularly using Edale or Hathersage as a base. That also removes the need to finish every walk exactly where you started.
