Lake District Walking Weekend Planner
The old paid Weekend Pack has been retired. This page now keeps the useful part: a free starting point for choosing two good Lake District days without trying to force a big fell into bad weather.
Seven walks to build a weekend around
| Walk | Good for |
|---|---|
| Derwentwater Circular | A longer lower-level day when the high fells are not appealing. |
| Catbells | A compact fell day with big views, popular for good reason. |
| Tarn Hows | An easier, lower-level option for a gentler day. |
| Loughrigg Fell | A smaller summit near Ambleside with excellent views. |
| Buttermere | A beautiful lower-level circuit in the western Lakes. |
| Haystacks | A rockier mountain day for suitable weather and experience. |
| Fairfield Horseshoe | A long, committing ridge day for good conditions and prepared walkers. |
Three simple weekend combinations
Keswick: one fell, one lower day
Use Catbells as the higher day and Derwentwater as the lower-level alternative or second day. It keeps both walks close to the same general base and gives you some flexibility if the tops are poor.
Ambleside: ambitious or gentle
Fairfield Horseshoe is the serious option. Loughrigg Fell gives you a much shorter alternative when the weather, daylight or tired legs make a full ridge day a bad idea.
Western Lakes: Buttermere and Haystacks
Buttermere is the lower-level choice; Haystacks adds a mountain day when conditions suit. Do not treat the two as interchangeable simply because they start in the same beautiful part of the Lakes.
Pack for the route you actually choose
Use the free UK Hiking Checklist Builder for the basics, and check the individual route page before leaving. For footwear and clothing, the walking-shoe guide and waterproof-jacket guide cover the practical trade-offs.
